A
glorious day at Colwick, the sun shining and we might even think it
was summer already! The first of three Taster days planned this
season run by Colwick Fly Fishing Club.
Today
we had 4 participants who have never picked up a fly rod before. So
we started with a general talk about the safety aspects of fishing
from both boat and bank, wearing glasses at all times to protect your
eyes, a peaked cap or hat, boat etiquette etc. Following this a short
casting demo before all 4 had a go at casting from the bank.
Following
this we set off on boats to try and catch a fish or two.
Success
!- in that two instructors had fish on and were able to pass rods to
their partners to play the fish. Martin who had already had many fish
on and off took Rosemary’s rod and landed a great 4lb approx
trout. Not bad for your first fish! It took him quite a while and
little rest was needed! He landed a couple more during the morning.
Gerald landed a couple on Keith’s rod. The other two boats were
frustrated with pulls and fish coming short.
There
was a pleasant break for lunch on the bank with time for a natter and
stretch of the legs - and fishy tales of course!
We then
changed boat partners other than Ian and Richard who stuck together.
Martin and Keith had a good time, Keith landing an approx 8lb, and
Martin playing several more. Karen got to play her first trout with
Rosemary which she landed successfully and then went on to hook one
herself and land that successfully. Susie and Gerald experienced
some good pulls but coud not connect. That’s fishing!
Black
and Green, Nomads, Diawl Bachs, Black & Olive Buzzers were
successful flies through the day.
It was
very rewarding to introduce folk to this wonderful sport and I just
love the smile when someone lands their first fish. Hope to see you
all again and do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of more
help. You are also welcome to come to CFFC meetings at the Vale
Social Club, 2nd
Wednesday of the month excluding July and August.
Lastly
BIG THANKS to CFFC members who gave their time to help out today.
