Junior day on 15th June - Salmon & Trout Assoc/Colwick FFC

Rosemary reports:

This was another successful day with 15 youngsters taking part - some for the second time this year, with 5 newcomers and two who are becoming regulars!
The wind was strong the forecast a bit iffy and we did experience a couple of heavy showers but this did not seem to put anyone off.
Our routine was the usual one of some casting practice first, then some fly tying followed by an excellent BBQ provided by Bob turpin to whom we are extremely grateful.
After sustenance we ventured to the bank trying to find the least windy spots to make casting a little easier. 3 Fish were landed, one by Michael Atkins paying his second visit and he was duly thrilled with his first ever trout caught on a black buzzer. Samuel George and Duncan Monaghan, fly fishing for the very first time, both caught on black and green tadpoles thet they had tied themselves during the morning. Several more of the youngsters experienced takes and one or two played and lost fish. Hopefully next time they will be ready for these often gentle takes  and lift into the fisha little more quickly. TIGHT LINES is uttered with alot of meaning!
It was great to see some proud looking parents when they came to collect their youngsters and the look of disbelief of those whose youngsters had caught a fish. This gives us [the helpers] a great thrill too and I get more of a kick seeing someone catch their own fish than I do catching my own now!
I was much amused when Duncan's mum said that he had told her that morning not to get anything for tea as he would bring a fish home. With such positive thoughts he did too. Brilliant and a lesson to us all!
These days would not happen without support from the Salmon and Trout Assoc, Colwick Park Fishery, Colwick FFC and time given by individuals to give a hand. This was particularly helpful today as the youngsters were well spread out along the banks to fish and was hugely appreciated. A big thanks to all.
