England Ladies Fly Fishing Champion for 2013

Rosemary has a day to remember

- or equally never to be forgotten!
Rosemary Gunn is often to be seen at Colwick Fishery or on a DCAC water, is a stalwart member of CFFC and helps run S & A junior events at Colwick. She set off to Draycote on Sunday 1st September to fish The England Ladies National for 2013.
Owing to other commitments she had been unable to practice beforehand, had not fished Draycote since 21st July, so therefore had no great expectations. The aim was the heaviest bag with a limit of 8 fish and a time bonus of 1lb per hour.
Luckily she was drawn to fish with Margaret Curtis who has fished for England many times and had fished Draycote the Sunday before. They refrained from the temptation of going to Rainbow Corner where most boats rushed off, fish having been caught there on practise days. A little bird had suggested to Margaret that starting with a drift down towards G buoy might be a sensible idea.
They landed five fish between them on the first drift, so with this excellent start they stayed in that area for the day doing drifts from beyond H buoy to G buoy, with some nearer the dam wall. Margaret fished with a Floater most of the day other than switching to a Di 3 for a while as Rosemary was doing better on hers. After a quiet spell Rosemary changed to a Midge Tip and took 2 more fish - making 7 by midday. As always the last one seems like it will never come, but changing back to the Di 3, a Cruncher did the business for her at 2.30pm. Margaret landed her last at 4pm. Rosemary’s were taken on a Sunburst Blob, Cruncher and a couple on a small Tequilla Booby. All Margaret’s were taken on a Diawl Bach bar one on a Cruncher.
As Rosemary said, “To qualify for England again was a great joy. To be the 2013 Champion is something I had never dreamed of and has to be one of the greatest thrills in my life. To have my name on the trophy alongside so many brilliant fishing ladies is an honour indeed.”
“Ladies everywhere! – The Ladies National is all a lot of fun and very do-able when you go out for an enjoyable days fishing. This was my frame of mind when I went out. Have a go next year!”
